UPDATED Green Key Statement – conformity with EU Directive 2024/825
Green Key is updating its criteria, processes, and policies and is transitioning to a model in which certification is conducted by an independent legal entity in preparation to meet the requirements of the upcoming EU Directive, Empowering Consumers for the Green Transition (2024/825). Our aim is to ensure that all Green Key certified establishments are assessed in full compliance with applicable EU regulations and requirements. Green Key is committed to a robust and credible certification system.
The revised criteria have been developed in line with the principles of ISO 14024:2018. The updated processes and policies are being aligned with the principles of ISO 17065:2012.
As part of this process, Green Key is in dialogue with DANAK, Denmark’s national accreditation body (NAB), regarding the structure and conformity with ISO 17065. In accordance with EU requirements and guidance from DANAK, certification activities will be carried out by a legally independent certification body, ensuring clear separation between scheme ownership and conformity assessment to safeguard impartiality.
Green Key is also a member of the Tourism Sustainability Certifications Alliance (TSCA), a global coalition of nine certification programmes representing more than 19,000 certified establishments. As part of its ongoing development, Green Key is aligning with relevant TSCA requirements for minimum criteria and certification processes.
As we are in ongoing dialogue with legal advisors, DANAK, and existing certification bodies, we encourage everyone in the Green Key network to contact Green Key International staff directly with any questions, concerns, or uncertainties.
